For years I blamed Leviathan For my unhappiness (being in the belly thereof) Then after the old whale died Turns out I’m still sad. Funny thing is: Levi, Despite being the world’s largest mammal Wuz the closest thing I ever got To any kind of father figure. O, there were plenty of foxes & crickets & old men with squeeze boxes, But no anthropomorphized being Ever made me feel like a real boy Quite like the sea creature. He wuz who I went to First time my clockwork heart Got broken– He the pater proxy who held my hand When the Blue Fairy Wuz being such a bitch– His the words That talked me thru Such a wooden adolescence. Only later did we grow apart When it came my time to kill him (metaphorically speaking, natch) In that so-called Rite o’ Passage Wherein I ascend & he recedes– Thus he retched me out upon the shore A fullgrown man forevermore Nevermore another star To wish a stupid wish Full longing for the time I spent In that accursed fish.
This is beautifully raw and deeply evocative. I love how you give shape to such complex feelings through Leviathan, representing both comfort and struggle, connection and letting go. It’s a powerful reflection on growth and loss, and the bittersweet passage into adulthood. Thank you for sharing something so personal with such poetic clarity.
Strange how we can spend years blaming the thing that held us, only to miss it once we are finally free. That last longing for the “accursed fish” landed harder than I expected.
Monstro as ur-father, patermost, dived full away while the backup singers choir, "who's yer daddy?" And then I became one. What mud lies at the bottom of all of us.
Nailed it. And ooh, Jarrett is the cherry on the sundae.
Ain’t he though
Deep sea stuff
It’s either that or the Devil

And thank you for the thoughtful response. 💚

The real Levi was a tuff guy to love, but I miss him every day

That’s some serious sediment
Everyone should have a Leviathan in their lives
Oh this…
Such a wooden adolescence
Heart breaking, with an elegant immediacy and language worn in like a pair of favourite shoes. I loved this.
Cheers, Sea. And thanks for tuning in
Likewise. I normally stick to poetry and prose. That article is intentionally different. Bit exposed
Keep up the good work and I’ll keep reading
