Corinna Careening
Left her luvver on the shore Gist another rawboned boy With his heartbroke in his hand. For she has bigger fish to fry The wide whiled whurld awaits– Corinne is sure there’s more to life Than brats & bills & doily lace. Sez she, “This plot is one mad carom Harum scarum slick as snot We’re wearing highheeled banana peels Got no time for Dr. Jones, luv.” “Spin or get spunover Tis the madcap Caucus Race I’m a crooked politician Cuz I change so much my face– Keeping Proteus wicked bizzy All at once I’m pixie me Manic dreaming girly Stepped down from the silver screen, Till the spirit cums to move me When tis omikase madonna whore Keep yr hands up off this body These sins & yens are mine alone.” PS– In case ya haven’t guessed it I’m the one got left behind Boneraw broken hearted Thought Corinne less cruel than kind Put my eggs in one big basket Cuz she baked the bestest biskits But I shoulda known by the blur She was too short for this smalltown Thus milady slipped away. Now I’m high & dry as Dido But my fate won’t get me down Tis better to have luvved & lost A devilish dervish such as she Than any steadfast Sallysue Who knows exactly what to do– Gist ask ol’ Adam who after Lill(ith) Had to settle then for Eve. Meanwhile– Corinna careens to a corkscrew tattoo She pirouettes the bleeding edge Where there be monsters All hope is abandoned Except the circumference that radiant reeling Still insists the song is forever So long as the dance never stops.

The language is wonderfully unruly, but beneath all the swagger and wordplay there’s real tenderness in the voice of the one left behind. Corinna feels less like someone escaping a town than someone refusing to become still. “So long as the dance never stops” was the line that stayed with me.
